I have never been so excited to see Friday. I know you’re excited too because it is Fitness Friday with me and Jillian at Baby Doodah!
This week’s theme is when you’re stuck in a workout rut. We have all been there and if you haven’t it is coming…
The thing is, it doesn’t have to be this way. Those workout clothes can easily make their way out of the jammies bin and back to the weight bench. Instead of giving out tips like I did last week, I am going to tell you a little story.
I began running/walking/waddling/crawling races in December 2006. Yeah, it was awhile ago. Since then I have done my fair share of races from 5ks to half marathons. The thing is, I got really bored of running after awhile. I was so over it around the same time many people were just discovering it. I couldn’t relate at all and so I felt like an outcast. I indeed was in a running rut with no motivation. I did a few races during this time but it felt more like work than actual enjoyment.
Fast forward to February 2014. It was snowing foolishness outside. If you live in Northern VA then you know we had a weekly snow this winter. I was sitting on my laptop at 5am remembering my goal of running a marathon, 26.2, during my 26th year of existence. I also have been putting this goal off since 2009. So what did I do? I signed up to fundraise for the Washington Humane Society which guaranteed a bib to the 2014 Marine Corps Marathon. Snazzy stuff right there. A goal! Step 1 to getting out of a rut!
If there is a step 1 we at least need a step 2. Step 2 would have to get me uncomfortable for this to work. Ruts are serious business people! So I stepped outside my comfort zone and signed up for group distance running. I meet with my coaches and fellow runners 2x a week; one long run and one track work session. After 2 sessions I already see my running spark coming back and look forward to the next meet. Who is excited for a long run? This girl!
So am I out my rut?
Moral of the story? Make a goal and step outside your comfort zone. You never know what may happen!
Personal Fitness & Food Updates
Fitness ~ Marathon training is going good thanks to the group. This is seriously worth every single penny. I really enjoy that while it is an organized run everyone does their own thing. Some people run together, others alone (like me) but all still supported by coaches regardless.
Food ~ Weight wise the scale chimed in at -0.5 pounds for this week. This puts me at -4.5 pounds for one month but it was met with a lot of guesswork. I am now looking into my marco-nutrients (fat, carbs, protein), along with my calorie consumption for more tweaks. I ran a Marcos calculator which spit out that I was WAY under-eating. Me? Really? I am going to try the free calculator for now but may pay for a customized plan. Skinny Meg inspired me to give it a shot. (Just remember, neither her or I are professionals/nutritionists/dietitians. Use common sense homies.)
